As part of its Light Oil Market Access Program, which seeks to expand access to markets for growing volumes of North Dakota and western Canada light oil production, Enbridge is constructing the Southern Access Extension pipeline. The 165-mile (265-kilometre), 24-inch diameter pipeline will transport crude oil from Pontiac, Illinois, at Enbridge’s Flanagan Terminal, where it will receive crude oil from Enbridge Energy Partners, L.P.’s Lakehead System, to Patoka, Illinois. The anticipated in-service date for the approximately $0.8 billion pipeline is in the second quarter of 2015.

Enbridge ran a successful Open Season in December 2012 and announced a second binding Open Season on June 5, 2013 to solicit additional commitments from shippers for capacity on the proposed Southern Access Extension pipeline. The diameter of the pipeline could be increased, depending on the results of the second Open Season which closed on Sep. 30th, 2013.
